“My God! We’ve climbed the thing! We’ve done it!” ~ Edmund Hillary

Between 1920 and 1952, seven major expeditions had failed to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In 1924, the famous mountaineer George Leigh-Mallory had perished in the attempt. In 1952, a team of Swiss climbers had been forced to turn back after reaching the south peak, only 1000 feet from the summit.

Edmund Hillary joined in Everest reconnaissance expeditions in 1951 and again in 1952. These exploits brought Hillary to the attention of Sir John Hunt, leader of an expedition sponsored by the Joint Himalayan Committee of the Alpine Club of Great Britain and the Royal Geographic Society to make the assault on Everest in 1953.

The expedition reached the South Peak on May, but all but two of the climbers who had come this far were forced to turn back by exhaustion at the high altitude. At last, Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a native Nepalese climber who had participated in five previous Everest trips, were the only members of the party able to make the final assault on the summit.

At 11:30 on the morning of May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit, 29,028 feet above sea level, the highest spot on earth. Edmund Hillary returned to Britain with the other climbers and was knighted by the Queen.

Now world famous, Sir Edmund Hillary turned to Antarctic exploration and led the New Zealand section of the Trans-Antarctic expedition from 1955 to 1958. In 1958 he participated in the first mechanized expedition to the South Pole.

Hillary went on to organize further mountain-climbing expeditions but, as the years passed, he became more and more concerned with the welfare of the Nepalese people. In the 1960s, he returned to Nepal, to aid in the development of the society, building clinics, hospitals and 17 schools.

Hillary was born in 1919 and grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. It was in New Zealand that he became interested in mountain climbing. Although he made his living as a beekeeper, he climbed mountains in New Zealand, then in the Alps, and finally in the Himalayas, where he made his mark in history.

People travel for different reasons. If someone asks you why you travel, what will you say? Some people travel to get away from the tediousness of their daily lives. They don’t care where they go or what they do, as long as they have a change of scenery. Others travel to pamper themselves – probably something that they do not have the luxury of doing on a daily basis.

Have you ever thought of traveling to challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone? To be honest with you, I have always belonged to the first two groups I described above. When I travel, I want to stay at the most comfortable hotel I can afford. I want to do things that I am not “afraid” of doing. I stay away from anything that might keep me away from my comforts.

Then I tried traveling with different sets of friends. Suffice it to say that I am experiencing a paradigm shift.

During my past few trips, I had some new experiences that I probably wouldn’t have even considered before.

1.	I stayed at a backpacker’s hotel. (Well, it was still not a “real” hostel, but it was interesting.)
2.	I walked around a strange city to discover it. (No cabs for a while.)
3.	I stayed at a camp site. (I didn’t sleep in a tent, but the room didn’t have its own bathroom!)
4.	I went on a trek – to a volcano’s crater, no less!
5.	I took a bus back to the city alone. (Well, with my friend, but not with the person I am used to traveling with.)

In the next few months, I already have a rough sketch of what I am going to do as I discover more places. I am going to push myself to leave that comfort zone. Little by little, I get to see the world with a different set of eyes. I challenge you to do the same!

Many Filipinos still remember that fateful day in 1991 when a relatively unknown volcano erupted north of the capital. The eruption caused a lot of damage and killed hundreds of people. Its effects were felt far and wide, even affecting the global climate. Today, this volcano has become a destination for many a tourist.

The fact that it erupted fairly recently and that you can hike right up to the crater is too tempting to resist. Even more so, the sight that greets you at the end of the trek is enough to entice anyone – even those who wouldn’t normally go hiking. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

That’s my first view of the crater. The eruption created this gorgeous lake, the depth of which is currently undetermined. I had seen pictures of this view so many times before but nothing prepared me for the real thing.

Yes, you can go swimming in the lake. The water is perfect! At first it may seem too cold but the sun is hot enough to keep you warm.

There are different routes you can take to the crater – we chose the easiest one. We drove all the way to Capas, Tarlac, where the famed Pinatubo Spa is located. We met our guide there, who took us near the crater on a 4×4. That ride lasted about an hour (rough road all the way!), while the trek lasted about 30 minutes. According to the sign below, we’re way older than senior citizens!

I say who cares? The experience was worth everything!

Indeed, when I travel, I want to be as comfortable as I can afford to be. I do know, however, that there are a lot of people who can’t get enough of an adrenaline rush. If you are one of those people, then you better check out Lonely Planet’s new book – 1000 Ultimate Experiences. I haven’t had the chance to go through the whole thing but I have had a sneak preview of the thrills to be had, courtesy of Reuters. If I were to choose, here are the top 3 thrills I’d at least think of trying out.

Running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. I have heard and read about this festival since I was a child, and recently a friend told me that he experienced it for himself. Now this guy is a total adrenaline junkie and is not afraid of animals, so he had a blast. I don’t know if I can actually do it, but it’s worth thinking about.

Swimming with dolphins in New Zealand. Let me tell you that I am not a very good swimmer so this is probably a bad idea, but dolphins are supposed to be friendly to us humans, so why not?

Riding a motorcycle-taxi in Thailand. Yes! I have actually tried this. And no, it is not that bad. I guess coming from the Philippines has its advantages! For Westerners, it might be the adrenaline rush that you have been yearning for.

If these are too lame for you, check the book out for yourself and make your own list!

Baguio City in the Philippines is known as the country’s Summer Capital. This city was founded by the Americans during their stay in the country, and is located on a mountain. The weather is pretty cool, making it the perfect destination when one yearns to get away from the heat and humidity of the lowlands.

Now, the city government and the Baguio Convention and Visitors Bureau (BCVB) are working in tandem to promote the city as a new adventure destination. The Philippine Information Agency reports:

“We will be promoting Baguio, not as the usual tourist destination, but as a place where people (tourists) has a lot other things to do, where adventure begins,” De Leon said.

In the forum, BCVB Executive Director Amboy Guevara, presented the new tourism map they have designed and the pavilion that they will be creating for the PTM. He also presented the new adventure destination and packages that BCVB will be promoting.

The adventure packages involve rapelling, rock climbing, river surfing, airsoft fun games, fishing kayaking, All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), cave tours, Balatoc Mines tour and trekking, among others.

For the adventure package destinations, it includes Ambuclao and Binga Dam, the Ambongdolan cluster of caves in Tublay, Mt Pulag and the Bulalakao Lake of Kabayan and Mt Sto Tomas in Tuba.

Traveling in the Philippines may not be as easy as it is in European and American cities but buses, airplanes, and car rentals make Baguio a very accessible destination from the capital, Manila. If you’re looking for something different, check out what Baguio has to offer.

Last trip wore you out? Well, that’s all part of the game, and with any trip it just happens to be part of the whole experience making it memorable and enjoyable. From the planning stage, you are made to decide on several aspects of a vacation from deciding where to go and when, where to stay and what to do when you get there. With a large family, this quickly turns into a nightmare where decisions become more than challenging. Though we want all voices heard, we have to put out feet down sooner or later to get down and move on with the vacation. Booking flights is another worry for everybody wants the cheapest deals around. Planning where to stay is the next thing to consider and then what to do as you get there. This is the common path vacations take and looking at it all, it’s not pretty.

Now here’s a suggestion, wing it! Why not just schedule, pack your bags and let destiny take hold. Many states and cities have established infrastructure to cater to travelers, local and foreign indeed for it is one of the most profitable industries around. The locals get work, and they get to benefit from the many visitors who pass by their doors as their city blooms and develops. Cities like Sea Isle City in New Jersey have now just come out and started to advertise the varied offerings of their state which stems from winter sports to fun in the sun at the beach. Florida is also hailing a revival in the tourism industry as they try to recover form the crash that sent property prices hitting rock bottom. So take out tip and just wing it, get there and enjoy. Who knows, this might turn out to be your most memorable vacation yet.

I thought I’d put in one more post before the year ends – and before we hit the road, with no certainty of getting a good connection to the Internet on New Year’s Eve. I just realized that I am taking for granted that we SHOULD travel for New Year. It’s just that I don’t get that many days off at work and the last 2 weeks in December is usually the only free time that I have. So why travel for the New Year? Why not just stay at home, like some people do, and welcome the year ahead in one’s comfort zone?

Though I do not place much stock on superstition, I do believe that it would be a good thing to welcome the New Year with some new experience that will help give you a more positive outlook in life. I believe that traveling and going to a place that you have never been to before is one way of doing so.

Now I am not saying that this is the only way to welcome the New Year but it surely is one of the things that you can do to help inject some freshness and vigor in your life. After all, we spend most of the 12 months in the year going about our daily lives, our routine businesses. This is one time in the year when you can leave your cares behind and just totally enjoy yourself. And what better way than to embark on an adventure – no matter how short?

That’s it for this year. To a great 2009!

I can just imagine how austere this kind of hotel would be.

According Frank and Patrik Riklin, who are by the way twin artists, the hotel was originally an art project. They wanted to make use of a nuclear bunker, of which there are many in the country. This particular nuclear bunker is located in the small town of Sevelen, which is about one hour away from Zurich.

First a little background on the existence of nuclear bunkers – it used to be that every town had to have one. In the days of the Cold War, this was a mandate in the country. Now, these bunkers are still in existence but are not really put to use – hence the idea of the twins.

Fast forward to the present – the twins decided to convert the small town’s bunker into a hotel with the barest of amenities. What started out as a “project” has garnered a lot of interest, opening up the possibility for it to become a “real” hotel. Dubbed the Null Stern Hotel, it is the world’s first establishment of its kind.

Guests can expect Swiss Army style bunk beds, warm bottles for heat (a heating system would be too expensive for the bunkers!), shared bathrooms, unpainted walls, earplugs (to drown out the noise of the ventilation system), and complimentary chocolates on your pillow!

How much will this cost? Anywhere from 7 euros to 20 euros. The hotel is not yet open but if you are interested, you can get in touch with them through this e-mail address: info@sonderaufgaben.ch.

Do you have a passion for the environment – rain forests in general? If so, then you would want to know about The Sony World Photography Awards, which is going to be held from the 15th of April to the 19th of the same month in 2009. The main awards ceremony will be held on the 16th of April in Cannes, France.

What do you need to know in order to join the contest? Well, the organizers are looking for the best photos that will fit the two themes:

1. What the rainforest means to you – its splendour, animals and plants,
destruction and loss.

2. The enjoyment you get out of the forests where you live and the direct and indirect effects of deforestation on your life.

Though you may not be the best photographer in the world and you may not live in a rain forest or near one, if you are traveling to one in the next few months, you might want to take snapshots for the contest. They have a separate contest for those who are professional photographers so you do not have to worry about being out of your depth. If you think about it, amateur photographers who travel to different parts of the world on vacation sometimes take the best shots.

We have some rain forests where I live and perhaps, if I get the chance to visit one next month, I will try to go out there and take pictures. Who knows, I just might get the chance to win? More than the prestige, the whole concept behind the contest is a very good cause. It is one way by which we can join the effort in helping out Mother Nature.

He was out there in the balcony watching the winds batter the trees, reveling in the sound of the thunder, and enjoying the rain on his face. If I had let him, he would have walked up and down the street enjoying the storm. I guess he would enjoy the new kind of vacation that seems to have gained a huge following in the recent years.

According to Jacquelyn Lewis, storm chasing vacations are the in thing for adrenaline junkies these days. While majority of the American people tend to run away when hurricane and tornado warnings are sent out, these people actually run toward the direction of the storm. And they are not doing this alone, mind you. There are actually agencies which cater to this kind of preference. Lewis expounds in her article:

“There are a lot of adrenaline junkies out there,” says Roger Hill, a Denver-based storm chaser of more than 22 years. “A lot of people are just fascinated by severe weather.” He should know — for more than 11 years, he has been leading groups of them on storm-chasing vacations organized by Silver Lining Tours, a company he co-owns with fellow chaser David Gold.

Silver Lining is one of several companies that, for a few thousand dollars, will take you on the ride of your life, tailing twisters and tempests through Tornado Alley in a vehicle equipped with high-tech equipment. You’ll get closer to the action than you ever could — or should — on your own.

This kind of reminds me of the movie Twister (I might be wrong about the title). You know, the researchers get on a high when they get near a tornado. I suppose that this provides an alternative means of vacation for some. I don’t know if I have the guts to actually chase a tornado, though. Would you?

It used to be that Iraq was definitely NOT part of people’s travel plans. It is a pity because Iraq, like many countries in the Middle East, has a lot to offer in terms of tourism. It is thus good news that pretty soon, maybe, most people from all over the world may be able to visit Iraq and experience its wonders for themselves.

The Associated Press recently published an article detailing how the government is looking to tourism to give the country’s economy a boost:

Iraq’s government is beginning to promote tourism. It will be a tough sell — and even if officials can grab the attention of the adventuresome, Iraq’s tourism facilities are shabby.

The opening of a new airport Sunday in the southern city of Najaf is expected to help boost the number of religious pilgrims, mostly Iranians, visiting Shiite shrines to 1 million this year, double the number that came in 2007.

Pilgrims are admittedly a special kind of visitor. “They do not consider any kind of danger or harassment. They have a religious ideology that considers any difficulty they face as a merit and mercy for their piety,” said Abdul Zahra al-Talaqani, spokesman for Iraq’s tourism ministry.

Iraq is thinking about more than pilgrims, though. Last week, officials displayed tourism posters and said they are intent on attracting visitors to Iraq’s fabled archaeological sites, many of them looted and damaged in fighting.

Personally, I would really love to have a chance to visit this part of the world. Looking at the practical side, however, I doubt that even today, it is safe to go frolicking around Iraq. Then again, who said that adventures have to be safe?

How about you, would you consider going to Iraq as a tourist anytime soon?

I was planning on writing about something else for this post but when I read the article on unique vacations over at Ottawa Citizen again, I knew that I had to write one more post about some of the most unique places you can visit for a vacation. Here goes.

Cockroach Races — Brisbane, Australia
Each Australia Day, Brisbane’s Story Bridge Hotel encourages visitors to “BYO Roach” for its creepy-crawly cockroach races.

“The bagpipers led the sponsor girls onto the racing surface (a bit like a boxing bout) along with the cockroaches, where the MC read the contestants’ names to the crowd. The names were very creative and can’t be repeated here.”

I don’t know if a lot of people would be attracted to this idea – especially those from the West who may have an adverse reaction to these critters. Personally, I think there would be other unique things to do and places to visit in Australia. What do you think?

Shot Cafe — Riga, Latvia
Drink a toast to modern Latvia at the lounge where a bathroom break brings joy to travellers.
“Shot Cafe has the best toilet EVER. It seems a big boast to make, but the loo here has to be seen to be believed. Mood lighting turned the bathroom from a deep blood-red to a vibrant green to a shadowy blue to a piercing white. The toilet seat was clear perspex inset with gilded barbed wire and razor blades. We fell in love with that toilet.”

I don’t know what it is about toilets that seem to fascinate some people but if this café is any indication, then I suppose there IS something about toilets. I think I would grab a chance to go to Shot Café.

If you thought the first two places I mentioned in the previous post are strange, then think again! Here are several more unique places to visit for your vacation. (Thanks again to the Ottawa Citizen).

Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant — Bangkok, Thailand
The restaurant’s name raises eyebrows, but it’s all for a good cause.

“Don’t be misled by the restaurant’s odd name or put off by the array of contraceptive devices for sale. This very popular place raises funds for the Population & Community Development Association, the country’s family-planning program. The complex is a restaurant, bar, Internet cafe, massage shop, and gift shop all rolled into one. All diners get a condom with coffee, instead of an after-dinner mint.”

I have actually eaten at this restaurant and it is quite beautiful I have to say. They have great Thai food and the service is excellent. We ate at the garden and it was very peaceful. Oh, and the condoms come in two sizes – Thai size and international size. That cracked me up!

Sourtoe Cocktail — Dawson City, Alaska
Anyone with a strong stomach can gain entry into the Downtown Hotel’s Sourtoe Cocktail Club by sipping a drink containing one of the hotel’s preserved human toes. Make it a big sip; rules say your
lips must touch the salted toe.

“So now I am a member of an exclusive club/Of those who drank a toe that was just a shrivelled stub/And then I promptly left the bar/To get my toothbrush and mouthwash and proceed to scrub!”

I do not know if I am adventurous enough to try this drink. Nah, I think I will pass. I’d visit, though, just to see the toe and watch other people try it. Would you take a sip?

Are you tired of the “regular” vacations that you always have? Don’t get me wrong, I really love going to beach and become a normal beach bum for a week. I’d also love to go to the mountains and relax like any other person. Sometimes, though, I get this hankering to do something weird. Aside from the experience itself, you get to have unique stories to tell your friends. I read this article at the Ottawa Citizen which details some of the most unique vacations that you can have. Let’s take a look at them.

The Great Whipped Cream Battle — Olomouc, Czech Republic

Fluff flies during this highlight of Olomouc’s week-long city festival. “Volunteers are divided into opposing teams and asked to arm themselves with trays of cream. There’s a countdown and then the teams rush towards each other. When the teams meet each other in the centre, the cream starts to fly.”

Oooh, I think this would be a really good stress buster! Make sure you bring your partner with you and when you disagree, you can just throw whipped cream at each other rather than fighting! Once the battle is over, you still have a lot of things to do and places to see. The Czech Republic has a lot to offer, after all.

The Modern Toilet Restaurant — Taipei, Taiwan

Find good food for less than $10 at this Taipei eatery — provided you don’t mind eating out of a (replica) toilet bowl.

“Eating here was a very unique dining experience to say the least. You are seated at a bathtub (your table) surrounded by toilets (your seats). Your food comes in your own sizzling toilet bowl.”

Now I don’t know about this. I have a particularly delicate stomach and even the thought of eating in a toilet bowl – albeit a replica – does not attract me at all. How about you?

As I said before, happiness could very well be a state of mind. If this is the case, then most everyone could remain happy even if they face some difficulties as they travel to and from their vacation destination. Here are some more tips on how to condition yourself and stay cool during your summer trip.

Bring along a huge bag of humor.
For those who are naturally easy going and have a sense of humor, this should not be a problem. But what about those of us who are, let us say, a bit on the uptight side? Well, there is nothing to do but gather up every teeny bit of “humor cells” in our bodies and put them in a bag. Lug this bag along on your trip and you’ll find that your trip will go much easier, even if you encounter glitches along the way. Try to find something silly or funny in the little things that bug you. I have found that this technique somehow minimizes the negative effect of adverse circumstances. Why don’t you try it yourself?

Make the whole trip out to be an adventure.
More than bringing along your sense of humor, make your whole trip out to be the adventure of your life. This is especially useful if you are going to a country that is much different from your own. It would not be so hard to “pretend” that you are embarking on an adventurous journey then. This way, you would be able to take things in stride.

Happy trails!

Going on a volunteer vacation is something different. It certainly is far from the typical luxurious vacation that many of you may be used to. As such, it is no simple matter to just decide that you want to take your family on one. Before you make the decision, here are some things that you should consider in order to prepare for a volunteer vacation.

Make sure the whole family is into it.
This is perhaps one of the most important – if not the most important – steps. As parents, you could merely “force” everyone into the idea. However, that could defeat the whole purpose of the trip. It would be better to explain to everyone the rationale behind it and then reach a consensus.

Do research on your destination.
Just like with most any other vacation, you have to do your own research regarding your destination. You cannot just rely on the information that the organization will give you – that might be extensive enough but it won’t hurt to do your own research. More than the physical location, it is very important that you learn about the culture of the people you will be interacting with as you will be totally immersed in their daily lives. Again, the whole family should be involved in this.

Get into the right mindset.
Going on a volunteer trip will be fun – there is no doubt about it. However, it will be nothing like the usual vacation. You would have to work and do things that you may not normally do. That is why it is important that everyone in the family realize this at the outset and be ready to step out of your comfort zones.

It’s the 1st of November, and in some countries, this date and the next (November 2) hold particular importance. November 1 is usually celebrated as All Saint’s Day, while November 2 is All Soul’s Day. Places in Latin America, the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa, especially the countries that are predominantly Catholic, consider this date as a public holiday. In most cases, this date celebrates the lives of the deceased, people honor their deceased loved ones by visiting cemeteries and churches. Though this day is associated with the dead, it is rarely somber or grim. Rather, most places celebrate it as a festival, with music, food and prayers. One famous celebration is Mexico’s El Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. If you’re fortunate enough to visit Mexico, especially Oaxaca, you’ll get a chance to be witness to a celebration that honors life as much as death.

The Day of the Dead begins at noon on November 1. November 1 is usually devoted to the souls of dead children, November for deceased adults. Celebrations are everywhere, at home, in public, and especially in the Pantheon Municipal (the cemetery). There, you’ll see what looks like a carnival in full swing: amusement rides, music, games, stands selling food, flowers and all kinds of items. There’s even a mariachi band to play through the night. The graves are decorated with hundreds of candles, and prayers mix with the sounds of families retelling anecdotes about the deceased.

Most graves and altars are decorated with ofrendas, or offerings, such as flowers, incense, fruits, special foods the dead enjoyed, water (in case the dead get thirsty), toys for dead children, and bottles of liquor for the adults. There will also be a religious picture, often the Virgin of Guadalupe, the Virgin Mary, or the Cross, as well as pictures of the deceased.
The common symbol of this holiday is the skull, which is represented in various ways. There are masks called calacas, and children roam around dressed as skeletons. Foods such as sugar skulls are gifts that are given to both the living and the dead, a holiday treat which children love. There’s also pan de muerto (bread of the dead), a sweet roll made in various shapes, with a little wooden effigy baked into the dough.

Next time November rolls around, why don’t you visit Mexico, and experience this remarkable party for the dead and the living?

All Hallow’s Eve. It’s the night of spooks and haunts, magic and mayhem! What better place to celebrate the magic of Halloween than in the famous Magic Castle, one of the most famous magic clubs in the world. Located in Hollywood, California, it hosts nightly performances by the world’s finest magicians. You can watch five different magic shows, and even listen to a piano-playing ghost named Irma who takes requests. The first room of the Castle has no visible doors, and one must say “Open sesame” to an owl to gain access, exposing the entrance to the club. The Magic Castle is housed in an authentic Victorian mansion that was originally built in 1908. It’s home to the Academy of Magical Arts (AMA), an organization devoted to the advancement of the art of magic and its history.

However, the Magic Castle is a private club; only members and their guests are admitted in to attend the club’s performances, though courtesy invitations can be obtained by magicians visiting from out of town. If you want to experience the full magical experience this Halloween, why not stay at the Magic Castle Hotel, an affiliate of Magic Castle. Guests of the hotel can get dinner reservations and are permitted inside the Magic Castle. You’ll also get a chance to dress up since a strict dress code (coat and tie for men, cocktail attire for women) is enforced. For families with kids, you’ll have to schedule your visit since minors are only allowed during Sunday brunch. You won’t have to worry about the lack of activities, though. It’s located just two blocks from Grauman’s Chinese Theater subway stop, Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Kodak Theater, and Universal Studios is just one subway stop away.

Happy Halloween!
