Unique Vacations (Last Installment)

I was planning on writing about something else for this post but when I read the article on unique vacations over at Ottawa Citizen again, I knew that I had to write one more post about some of the most unique places you can visit for a vacation. Here goes.

Cockroach Races — Brisbane, Australia
Each Australia Day, Brisbane’s Story Bridge Hotel encourages visitors to “BYO Roach” for its creepy-crawly cockroach races.

“The bagpipers led the sponsor girls onto the racing surface (a bit like a boxing bout) along with the cockroaches, where the MC read the contestants’ names to the crowd. The names were very creative and can’t be repeated here.”

I …

More Unique Vacations

If you thought the first two places I mentioned in the previous post are strange, then think again! Here are several more unique places to visit for your vacation. (Thanks again to the Ottawa Citizen).

Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant — Bangkok, Thailand
The restaurant’s name raises eyebrows, but it’s all for a good cause.

“Don’t be misled by the restaurant’s odd name or put off by the array of contraceptive devices for sale. This very popular place raises funds for the Population & Community Development Association, the country’s family-planning program. The complex is a restaurant, bar, Internet cafe, massage shop, and gift shop all rolled into one. All diners get a …

Unique Vacations

Are you tired of the “regular” vacations that you always have? Don’t get me wrong, I really love going to beach and become a normal beach bum for a week. I’d also love to go to the mountains and relax like any other person. Sometimes, though, I get this hankering to do something weird. Aside from the experience itself, you get to have unique stories to tell your friends. I read this article at the Ottawa Citizen which details some of the most unique vacations that you can have. Let’s take a look at them.

The Great Whipped Cream Battle — Olomouc, Czech Republic

More On Staying Happy While Traveling

As I said before, happiness could very well be a state of mind. If this is the case, then most everyone could remain happy even if they face some difficulties as they travel to and from their vacation destination. Here are some more tips on how to condition yourself and stay cool during your summer trip.

Bring along a huge bag of humor.
For those who are naturally easy going and have a sense of humor, this should not be a problem. But what about those of us who are, let us say, a bit on the uptight side? Well, there is nothing to do but gather up …

Preparing for a Do-Good Vacation

volunteer work
Going on a volunteer vacation is something different. It certainly is far from the typical luxurious vacation that many of you may be used to. As such, it is no simple matter to just decide that you want to take your family on one. Before you make the decision, here are some things that you should consider in order to prepare for a volunteer vacation.

Make sure the whole family is into it.
This is perhaps one of the most important – if not the most important – steps. As parents, you could merely “force” everyone into the idea. However, that could defeat the whole purpose of the trip. …

The Day of the Dead

It’s the 1st of November, and in some countries, this date and the next (November 2) hold particular importance. November 1 is usually celebrated as All Saint’s Day, while November 2 is All Soul’s Day. Places in Latin America, the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa, especially the countries that are predominantly Catholic, consider this date as a public holiday. In most cases, this date celebrates the lives of the deceased, people honor their deceased loved ones by visiting cemeteries and churches. Though this day is associated with the dead, it is rarely somber or grim. Rather, most places celebrate it as a festival, with music, food and prayers. One famous …

Welcome To Magic Castle!

All Hallow’s Eve. It’s the night of spooks and haunts, magic and mayhem! What better place to celebrate the magic of Halloween than in the famous Magic Castle, one of the most famous magic clubs in the world. Located in Hollywood, California, it hosts nightly performances by the world’s finest magicians. You can watch five different magic shows, and even listen to a piano-playing ghost named Irma who takes requests. The first room of the Castle has no visible doors, and one must say “Open sesame” to an owl to gain access, exposing the entrance to the club. The …

A-Maze-Ing Corn!

The Pig is Back! Castle-Dragon-Knight Maze

Last week, I suggested visiting a corn maze for a Halloween treat. It’s a great outing for a family, especially because it has something for everyone. A corn maze isn’t just fun, it’s educational too, and all at a very affordable cost, since most mazes just charge a modest fee. And you don’t have to go far, you can find a corn maze (especially this season) just about anywhere.

The fun in a corn maze is a-maze-ing (pardon the pun). Your kids will surely be wowed at the pictures the corn mazes depict. There are dinosaurs, pirates, scarecrows and even a depiction of …

Shiver Me Timbers!

In honor of today’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD), here’s a tour suggestion you might not have tried. Buccaneer Queen Pirate Ship Cruises offers only the best pirate tour for kids of all ages. This also includes adults who are kids at heart! The Buccaneer Queen is a 96-foot long ship that has been used in movies and TV commercials. It currently takes people along for a ride around Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The Whale Watching Tour will have you up very early in order to catch the beautiful gray whales of Cabo. These creatures migrate to the Sea of Cortez every winter in order to calve. You’d better get your cameras ready for this experience!

The Snorkeling Tour will …

Swapping Homes

After reading Camica’s post about Women Welcome Women WorldWide (5W), I remembered this blog I stumbled upon sometime last year - Travel the Home Exchange Way (called Home Exchange Travel before). The blog exposed me to a whole new way of vacationing.

Staying with another family during vacations is nothing new. In fact people have stayed with family and friends, or even friends of friends, since time immemorial. What is not so common is vacationing in the home of an almost stranger - an acquaintance. After all this requires not only hospitality but a huge level of trust. This is why 5W …
