Avoid the Thanksgiving Travel Crush

heavy traffic
This year, traveling during the Thanksgiving period is going to reach new heights – at least since the 911 incident. This information has been released by AAA based on a telephone survey they conducted. Their estimate is that about 37.2 million Americans will be traveling at least 50 miles from their homes during this period.

Taking these figures in mind, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the roads will be clogged like crazy during the upcoming holidays. If you are planning on going on a family trip, then I suggest that you plan as early as now in order to avoid the mass of people who will also be …

To Each His or Her Own Halloween

While Halloween may have originated from the Celts in Ireland, it has spread quite quickly all over the world, reaching continents as far as Asia. It’s also remarkable how different cultures manage to incorporate this old tradition with their own. In this entry, let me take you to some of those places and see how Halloween manifests itself there.

In China, Halloween is called by another name: Teng Chieh. During this day, the Chinese would offer food and drink to their departed ancestors by setting them before old photographs. They also light bonfires or lanterns in order to serve as a guide for the spirits who walk the Earth. In Buddhist temples, many people make “Boats of …

A-Maze-Ing Corn!

The Pig is Back! Castle-Dragon-Knight Maze

Last week, I suggested visiting a corn maze for a Halloween treat. It’s a great outing for a family, especially because it has something for everyone. A corn maze isn’t just fun, it’s educational too, and all at a very affordable cost, since most mazes just charge a modest fee. And you don’t have to go far, you can find a corn maze (especially this season) just about anywhere.

The fun in a corn maze is a-maze-ing (pardon the pun). Your kids will surely be wowed at the pictures the corn mazes depict. There are dinosaurs, pirates, scarecrows and even a depiction of …

The Town That Chocolate Built

For chocoholics like me, the town of Hershey’s is a Mecca for chocolate lovers.
And this coming Halloween should give you the perfect excuse to visit the town that was built by chocolate. Hershey’s town is more than just a chocolate factory, it’s already a resort destination filled with great family entertainment. It has a world-class theme park,
HERSHEYPARK, that’s home to over 60 rides and attractions. For daddies, there’s the Hershey Country Club with 36 holes of golf, and a chocolate spa for mom. Kids will go wild at ZOOAMERICA, and experience nature at the botanical garden. There’s also Historic Trolley Tours and the Hershey Museum, …

The Sweet Life

Trick or Treat…Give us something good to eat! What’s Halloween without the candy? Halloween is supposed to be spooky and frightening, but for the little kids, it’s all about the sweets they’ll get. More than the costumes, more than the stories, kids look forward to the one day they’re given the license to run around asking for candy. It really doesn’t matter if they get to eat all of the candies, what’s important is the fun they’ll get running around collecting those candies. This Halloween, you can kill two birds with one stone by making the trip to buy candies for the trick or …

Halloween’s Harvest

When I think of October’s harvest, the things that come to mind are pumpkin and apples. For me, apples and pumpkins have become synonymous with Halloween. What child hasn’t tried bobbing for apples, or received candy apples as a treat? Everybody in the family enjoys a nice, warm glass of apple cider, especially after coming in from trick or treating. And Halloween decorations aren’t complete without a jack-o-lantern. That’s why I’d recommend apple and pumpkin picking as an activity the whole family will enjoy. It’s a fun, outdoor (healthy!) activity that’s easy on your budget. You won’t even need to travel far; you can search the internet …

October’s Treats

October is one of my favorite months. Not only is it the month of Halloween and Trick or Treating, it’s also the prelude to the whole holiday season, culminating in every kid’s favorite month, December. October became more special when I became a mom and started buying in to all that Halloween hype. Usually, by the first week of October, I’m already racking my brains trying to come up with a killer costume (pun intended) for my kids. If you want to experience the whole Halloween fun, there’s a lot more to do than just trick or treating.

• Enjoy the fall harvest. Now’s your last chance to get your pick of fresh vegetables and fruits. …

Howl-O-Ween

Halloween jack-o-lantern
Yep, it’s just around the corner and as early as now, many people are already thinking of fun things to do when this holiday comes around. Probably not everyone enjoys Halloween as much as we do but it is a good excuse for a family vacation as any!

Here’s something different that you can try out this year. Instead of staying at home and having the kids go trick or treating as usual, why not spend a night or so at a Halloween-themed resort or hotel? Great Wolf Lodges is known for its Halloween parties for families.

With various locations scattered throughout the States, I am sure your family will be able to find …

Roll Out The Barrels!

For my husband, the one word that comes to mind when October comes along is Oktoberfest. It’s his idea of heaven, and if he could go to Munich, Germany for that event, he wouldn’t think twice about it. This 14-day festival is world-renowned, not only for the beer and the activities, but also for the celebrities that participate in the revelry. With the traditional words “O’zapft is!” (translation: the barrel has been tapped), the world’s largest beer festival begins. This year, the festival is expected to attract about six million beer drinkers all over the world. But for those who want to make this …
