How To Get Holiday Travel Deals
Posted by Noemi as Air Travel, Tips, Transport, Trends
I was watching the news earlier and they had this travel editor from Virtual Tourist as the guest. His predictions about holiday travel were not good – he said that it is unlikely that airfares would go down for Christmas, so it is a good idea to book now. That got me thinking about looking for more holiday travel tips. After all, everyone could use some savings these days. Here are some of the best tips I found.
I’ll be home for Thanksgiving…
…rather than Christmas, that is. The travel editor seems to be right. If you look at various web sites, you’ll find that the ticket prices for Christmas travel are considerably higher than the prices for Thanksgiving travel. If I were you, I’d consider going home for the turkey holiday.
Be flexible!
If you have already …

Traveling To Cuba
Posted by Noemi as Americas, Destinations, Tips, Transport
Previously, I wrote about the excitement being felt in the US travel sector due to the possibility of leisurely travel to Cuba. Unfortunately, it seems that a reader took things the wrong way – sorry about that. Jumping on a plane “to look at the poor suffering people in Cuba up close (as if you are visiting a circus)” is definitely NOT what I have in mind.
In any case, I have been doing my homework and looking at tips for traveling to Cuba. I found a very informative site called Go Cuba. It provides tips from packing to legal issues to getting around the country.
From what I read, when it comes to attire, you do not have to worry about being too formal. Casual attire is what’s in, especially during the day although if you …

Prediction: July 4th Travel Low
Posted by Noemi as Air Travel, Features, News, Tips, Transport, United States
What are your plans for July 4 weekend? Year in and year out, this weekend is celebrated by all Americans with abandon. While some people opt to stay at home, many opt to travel and take advantage of the mid-year holiday.
According to auto club AAA, however, this year’s July 4th will not be focused on traveling. Their prediction is that, in spite of the fact that gas prices have gone down considerably and continue to do so, fewer people will be hitting the roads during the holiday period. The rationale behind this prediction is the fact that economic situation is still uncertain and a lot of people have become victims of it. Some may have recently lost employment while others may be in danger of finding themselves in the same boat.
However, AAA seems to be focusing …

Biden Stirs Hornets Nest With Travel Comments
Posted by Noemi as Air Travel, Americas, Announcements, Health, News, People, Transport, United States, Warnings
A lot of people are on the edge these days. It’s not only due to the economic problems, but also other issues that crop up on a regular basis. The swine flu, for example; we know that this kind of occurrence will definitely affect the travel industry. This is even truer when people in authority release statements.
This is what VP Joe Biden did last week when he appeared on NBC’s Today Show. What might have been a personal opinion (I didn’t see the interview so I don’t know if he actually encouraged the nation to do as he said) has ruffled a lot of feathers. CBS News reports:
Transportation officials around the country found themselves scrambling this week to reassure worried commuters in the wake of Biden’s controversial comments Thursday on NBC’s “Today Show” that he …

Travel Rates Go Down with the Economy
Posted by Noemi as Air Travel, Backpacking & Budget, Cruises, Hotels, Resorts, Tips, Transport
With the economic crisis pulling everyone’s mood down, travelers at least have something to smile about – travel costs. The travel/tourism industry is feeling the effects of the crisis since vacations and other non-essentials are of course one of the first things cut off from ordinary people’s budget when things get tight. In response to the drop in both local and international travel almost all businesses relying on tourists are giving promos and specials to encourage people to still go ahead with their plans. So before you cancel the family trip or romantic getaway you’ve been saving up for so long check the current rates because even with a smaller budget you might actually get a better bargain.
Sure shot travel options with lower rates include:
Cruises – Whether headed out to the Carribean, going on a European cruise, or want to visit South America …

Free Travel On Christmas Eve In Australia
Posted by Noemi as Announcements, Australia NZ, Tips, Transport
I wonder if this kind of thing will ever happen in the United States? I read an article about Australians getting a special treat for the holidays. This is what the Herald Sun published today:
LONG-suffering commuters will get an early gift in 12 days – free public transport on Christmas Eve.
Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky confirmed last night commuters would get free travel on trains, trams and buses as a goodwill gesture for the raft of cancellations this week. It’s on top of the free travel already confirmed for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
The peak rail union late yesterday reached an agreement with Connex for a bonus to be paid to all staff in recognition of a smooth transition to the new timetable introduced last month. The bonus of about $1000 will be paid to 2700 staff …

Thanksgiving Travel: Yes or No?
Posted by Noemi as Tips, Transport, Trends, United States
Less than a week and it’s time to carve the turkey again! People have their own favorite holidays and I know several who prefer Thanksgiving over the other holidays of the year. Maybe it’s the turkey or maybe it’s the company – whatever the reason, Thanksgiving is indeed a reason to celebrate.
This year, it seems that more than staying within the vicinity of one’s home, it would be a good idea to travel. According to The Houston Business Journal, gas prices are looking good this Thanksgiving:
Retail gasoline prices continued to fall this week, and that may encourage last-minute holiday travel, according to AAA Texas.
The price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline fell 12 cents across the state to $1.88, while the nationwide average dropped 15 cents to $2.02 a gallon. In …

Vacations are supposed to be stress relievers. We are supposed to be relaxed and to be happy while on vacation. And what better place to start than when you leave home? Unfortunately, this might not be as easy as we want it to be. What with all the change in air travel and the ever increasing prices, we just might be in for more stress than we bargained for! Then again, I am a firm believer in happiness and contentment being largely a state of mind. So here are some tips on how to be a happier traveler this summer.

Making The Most Out Of Your Dollars In Europe (Part 2)
Posted by Noemi as Europe, Tips, Transport

Here are more tips from Charles Leocha.
Check into transportation passes for the city bus and subway systems.
Tourist passes are almost always a bargain. Take the train from the airport into the city if possible to save even more — these transfers are often included in the transportation pass. Some online travel sites sell these as an add-on to your package.
I think this is one thing that we should focus on. Many Americans are used to driving their own cars and thus go for rental cars when on vacation. European cities, though, normally have extensive public transportation systems. Not only would you save considerably on transportation costs but you’ll also have a better feel of the local culture if you take the buses and subways. Better yet, try walking if possible!
Do not exchange money …

Weirdest Causes Of Plane Delays
Posted by Noemi as Transport, Trivia

With all that talk about problems to expect when it comes to air travel, it’s about time that we talked about something on the lighter side, don’t you think? James Wysong recently wrote about 12 bizarre reasons for flight delays and I got a real kick out of it. Here are some of the funniest ones.
Lawnchair Larry
In 1982, a man attached helium filled balloons to a lawn chair and accidentally floated over LAX airspace at 16,000 feet. A Pan Am pilot preparing to land was the first to call about the spectacle. All flights and traffic ground to a halt while authorities dealt with the situation. Sound like an urban myth? Yes, but it’s true.
Yeah, this was featured in a show on either the National Geographic channel or the Discovery Channel. It has not …
