Go On A Cruise ALONE!

I wrote something about going as a solo traveler some time back, and I think it’s time to tackle this topic again. This is because I just found out something about cruise lines offering more solo travel deals these days. I have always wanted to go on a cruise but they’re just way too expensive for me. If this trend of lower prices for solos on cruises goes any further, then I just might find myself going on a cruise one of these days!

This is what I found out from Reuters:

“The tour industry is making way for the single traveler,” said Margie Jordan, spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Agents. “This is nothing that’s going to go away. The single traveler is going to have as many opportunities as anyone else.”

For years most travel …

Traveling Alone

solo_travelI saw a quote the other. These may not be the exact words, but it went: “It’s better to travel alone than to travel with a bad companion.”

Traveling alone is not something that appeals to everyone. This is especially true for couples and people who are attached to their friends and family. Why should they travel alone? But what if you suddenly find yourself with idle time without anyone to spend it with? Should you stay at home and hole yourself up? I think it’s a better idea to make travel plans, even if you have to go at it alone.

Naturally, traveling alone might take a little bit more careful planning. The beauty of it, though, is that you do not have to consult anybody else with regard to what you want to …

Out Of The Books Into The World

LouvreThe Da Vinci Code. Harry Potter. Angels and Demons. These are some of the most famous books in the recent years, and more than inspiring people to bury their noses in their pages, the stories have urged people to get out of their homes to go discover the real world behind the books. You’ve probably heard of people actually going on a trip with the places in the Da Vinci Code as part of their itinerary.

I remember meeting a French woman who used her vacation time to visit every single place mentioned in the Da Vinci Code. The Louvre was, of course, easy for her to visit, but she also went out of her way to travel to Scotland and the United States, just to see for herself what the places were actually like. Statistics …

Dealing with Jetlag and Climate Changes

Jetlag Bug

People who love to travel are already used to the different time zones that most countries have. Sudden changes in the time and weather may prove to be a problem on adjusting to such if a person is not used to such fast paced evolution and lifestyle.

For people, traveling to any part of the world such as the United States, Europe and Asian continents would need body clock adjustments as well. The cultural practices and traditions are not the only immediate things that globetrotters should worry about but rather their ability to cope up with change.

Climate also entails being ready for the level of health a person is able to sustain. Sudden changes like cold and hot temperatures would need standby requirements of medicine or clothing just in case to ensure that the human body does not …

2009: Second Safest Travel Year

I guess that’s just a bit of information that is not really of much to use the average traveler today. Yeah, last year could very well be one of the safest years of traveling – we’re very much alive despite going on several trips last year, right?

Now, enough sarcasm. The data may seem trivial to me (and maybe some of you) but I am sure someone will make good use of it. According to the International Air Transport Association, or IATA, in the year 2009, there was only 1 accident for every 1.4 million flights. That’s an impressive figure, isn’t it? However, the numbers only take into account Western-built jets. Then again, I don’t think I’ve ever flown in a non-Western jet. Have you?

Here are more details from Reuters:

IATA said the 2009 …

Is The iPad The New Travel Gadget?

I wish I could say yes. I was looking forward to January 27 as much as the next Apple enthusiast although to be honest, I was hoping for more iPhone news. When news about the iPad spread like wildfire, though, I found myself getting just as excited.

Since this is not a tech blog, let’s not go into the nitty gritty tech specs but suffice it to say that they are touting the iPad as the new travel must-have. It is supposed to revolutionize the way that we travel, but is it going to, really?

Let’s see, what do you normally need when you travel? I’d list down the essentials as:

• Camera
• Phone
• Laptop

Apple is promoting the iPad as something in between a phone and a laptop. It should be more than good enough to be your sole travel companion …

Free Wi-Fi At Airports Courtesy Of Google

google-microsoft-yahooYou might have heard of it already – Google is offering a holiday treat to the countless people who will be traveling over the holidays. The news is that the company will be providing FREE Wi-Fi at 47 airports throughout the United States during the holidays. Naturally, those who like being connected wherever they may be are happy about the news.

The free Wi-Fi stunt is already in place – it started on Tuesday – and will be in effect until the 15th of January 2010. How is Google going to accomplish this? The answer lies within the partnerships that the company has established. Together with the airports and companies like Time Warner and Advanced Wireless Group, Google aims to provide relief and convenience to the millions of people who will be flying in the next couple …

Living In The World Of Twilight

forksI never became a fan of Stephanie Meyer’s popular series, Twilight. I cannot pinpoint the reason – I did try to read the first book but I didn’t particularly care for it. I am sure that countless people around the world – people of all ages – will vehemently disagree with me. In fact, “Twilight tourism” is fast becoming a buzz word in travel circles these days.

The idea is not that novel. After all, a lot of people have embarked on their own journeys to experience Dan Brown’s stories for themselves. The Da Vinci Code started it all, and the subsequent stories added more destinations for fans to visit. Now, it’s Twilight’s turn. In spite of the fact that Halloween is over, the idea of visiting the setting of the story enchants fans.

Forks, Washington …

How To Get Holiday Travel Deals

1251243943Ah93YpI was watching the news earlier and they had this travel editor from Virtual Tourist as the guest. His predictions about holiday travel were not good – he said that it is unlikely that airfares would go down for Christmas, so it is a good idea to book now. That got me thinking about looking for more holiday travel tips. After all, everyone could use some savings these days. Here are some of the best tips I found.

I’ll be home for Thanksgiving…
…rather than Christmas, that is. The travel editor seems to be right. If you look at various web sites, you’ll find that the ticket prices for Christmas travel are considerably higher than the prices for Thanksgiving travel. If I were you, I’d consider going home for the turkey holiday.

Be flexible!
If you have already …

Airlines To Add Surcharge During Peak Season

delta-airlines-boeing-777I think it’s a load of c**p, but is there anything that we can do? From what I have been reading, it seems that airlines are going to be adding a fee to ticket prices for flights on the busiest days of the year. This means that those who are planning on going on a trip at Christmas and similar holidays will have to cough up more money.

Fox News has the story:

Travelers looking to fly on the busiest days of the year will see new sky-high prices on airfare, after multiple airlines decided to add a new $10 surcharge for popular travel dates this winter.

American Airlines first created the surcharge for domestic flights for the Sunday following Thanksgiving and the weekend of Jan. 2-3-, the dates during which many Americans will be returning home from Christmas and New …
