Pet Friendly Accommodations

There are plenty of accommodations nowadays that claim to be pet-friendly. However, the term is used very vaguely and it can mean anything from simply an establishment that allows owners to bring their pets along to one that has plush pet services like pet spas and pet sitters on call. As a pet owner you know the needs of your own pet and you might not need to stay in “the best” pet-friendly hotel/motel but you, of course, want to stay in a place that would be able to cater to your pet(s)’ needs.

Different pets have different needs and different owners have different preferences, so before choosing your accommodations make sure that the place you choose will fit you and your pet’s needs. You would do well to consider the following questions/issues before making any reservations.

1. Your pet’s sleeping arrangements – If your pet sleeps in bed with you ask the management if they allow pets to get on the furniture. If your dog is used to sleeping in a kennel outside the house ask if the establishment has heated dog kennels available. If your dog sleeps by the fire ask whether their fireplaces have fireguards to ensure your dog stays safe.

2. The kinds of pets allowed – Most pet-friendly establishments are dog and cat friendly but don’t have clear provisions for other kinds of pets. If you have an exotic pet make sure you specify the kind of pet you plan on bringing along and ask what their provisions for such animals are.

3. Vets/Animal clinics – Ask whether they have animal doctors on call or are partners with a local animal clinic/hospital. You would want to choose a place who you know can help you in case of a medical emergency.

4. Additional services/facilities – You might want to ask whether they have pet sitters, grooming services, exercise facilities (walking paths) and whatever else you and your pet is used to having at home.

5. Make sure you know all the house rules. Ask for any important things regarding pets that you haven’t asked them just to make things clear like places in the hotel where the pets are allowed and banned.

This is a great reminder to all pet owners and establishments which claim that they allow pets. Most of the time, we’re fooled by fake promises. It’s always best to prepare for the unexpected.

So true. And unless you go to a place knowing what you are actually going to get chances are it will put a wrinkle (if not ruin) an otherwise “would-have-been” perfectly good vacation.
