Tip #2 - Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is something many people do not really bother with. This is especially true for those who are simply planning on a really short trip or a trip not too far away. The preparations seem unnecessary and too big a hassle. After all what could go wrong? Right? Well the truth is a lot could go wrong. You’re just never really sure. That’s why it’s called insurance! If something DOES go wrong, in the end the time you spent choosing a good travel insurance package as well as the money you shell out to make sure you are covered for any eventuality will be really really worth it.

When choosing a travel insurance package though make sure that you get one that fits you. There are so many kind of packages to choose from and general insurance plans is NOT always the best way to go. I suggest avoiding those insurance policies spewed out by vending machines in airports because you will not get the best deal possible. Of course, if you are already on your way to the airport and still haven’t taken care of the insurance issue then that is better than nothing.

Before purchasing travel insurance make sure you learn more about:

  1. The travel insurance company - Find out their reputation. Look for feedback. Are there any problems with claims?
  2. The actual travel insurance plans - Find one that is tailored to your needs. There are insurance companies that offer family packages, special packages for skiers and backpackers, yearly multi-trip packages, etc. Make sure that if you are traveling to more than one country that the travel insurance policy you have covers ALL those countries.
  3. Your car insurance policy - If you will be driving to your destination find out if your car insurance will cover the trip and if not make sure to get a travel insurance that will cover it.
  4. Insurance rates - Compare the rates of different companies as well as different packages. Make sure that when comparing you do not look only at the price. Count your savings by looking at the overall value of the insurance you are holding.

I think you should also consider the risk you will be taking when you travel to other places…for example, if you are spending only a day or two in a relatively safe and efficient place, then taking out insurance may not be worth it. Then again, if you plan on spending a month in a developing country, you might want to take out insurance. Do you see what I am getting at?
