How to Effectively Use GPS When Traveling Abroad

October 14, 2015 By Louise

Traveling to new places and locating streets are easy to do today with the use of mobile technology. While some people still use the traditional paper maps when going to new countries and cities, many have developed a liking to the GPS or the Global Positioning System.

In recent years, the number of people in the U.S. using their mobile phones for maps and GPS navigation reached 9.61 million. This figure from Statista.com covered the years 2009 to 2012.

Many travelers today rely on the GPS whether they are driving towards their destinations or simply doing the walking tour. It comes very handy when you’re visiting a new place with absolutely no idea where the shops, restaurants and other attractions are. Thanks to the growing number of location-based services as well, more people are able to find what they’re looking for without much difficulty. [Read more…]

Best Apple Apps Travel Buddies

June 21, 2010 By noemi

Summer is almost here, and I am pretty sure you’re gearing up for some road time! I don’t know about you, but I am hearing about solo travel more and more. Truth be told, I am going to embark on a solo trip pretty soon, and I am a bit anxious about it. If you have got the iPhone, though, you’ll be happy to know that there cool apps that will do away with the need for a real travel buddy. Check them out.

Wi-Fi Finder
So why is this app cool? Well, if you’re going to another country, you’ll be trying to avoid using 3G (or even EDGE). Roaming charges are outrageous, aren’t they? So your best bet is to look for Wi-Fi hotspots! With this app, you can find information on Wi-Fi access points in more than 140 countries. No need to walk around waving your iPhone – just check the app and go where you need to go.

TripIt
If you’re like me, you might have some problems keeping track of your itinerary and other travel details. That’s why I always did best when there was someone with me to pay attention to these things. With TripIt, you can input all the data that you need – and then forget about it. You can store information and access it offline; you can even access maps and directions so you won’t get lost!

AroundMe
This app, I can surely use. Say you find yourself in some street. You don’t know anything about your surroundings. Use this app and find information on practically everything there is in the area – gas stations, ATMs, stores, and more. You can also get maps and directions.

All these apps are FREE. Now all I need is an iPhone.
