Traveling Through Zulu Land

July 10, 2017 By Carmen Esate

When I travel I like to know all I can about the locals, and when given the chance to choose from safaris in South Africa, I knew I had my work cut out for me. The Zulu race is a big part of the country and I was excited, yet daunted to find out all I could about this proud people.

The Zulu heritage goes back many years, but they only became a unique people around the early 18th century, pulling away from the many clans that were scattered around the wilderness area. [Read more…]

October 11, 2016 By Cosi Fry

Going out hunting can be an incredibly satisfying experience. But, there are details that you can handle in advance to make sure some aspects of your hunting trips go more smoothly, and you can avoid some of the anxiety that comes in certain circumstances, especially if you’re traveling abroad to your hunting destinations.

Five tips, in particular, include making sure your equipment is ready to go, planning trips to your favorite locations, potentially creating a vacation out of the experience, trying to use your prey as food, and taking the opportunity to meet other hunters while you’re out and about as well.

Get Your Equipment Straight

A big part of the satisfaction that comes from hunting will be by the fact that you pay attention to the accessories that you need during your trips. This can include using rangefinders or other equipment that makes your shooting better match your circumstances and skill levels. Even things like gun stands or cleaning equipment will help out your cause to make everything more convenient and efficient.

Travel To Your Ideal Location

Do you know what the best locations for hunting are? Find out what other people say, and then tweak the possibilities to fit your budget, your interests, and your time requirements. There are obviously different seasons that you would prefer, but beyond that, you can find information about what types of environments cater to the type of animal that you want to hunt, or perhaps just the overall type of experience that you’d be interested in having.

Create a Vacation Out of the Experience

And you can combine hunting with the idea of your vacation as well Plan on going to Alaska to soak up some of the tourist attractions up there? Add hunting to your list of activities. Anywhere that you go with wilderness is probably going to have some accessibility to particularly interesting areas if hunting is your priority. And though hunting exotic animals is often frowned upon, you can still go on safaris during vacations as well.

Use Your Prey For Food

To have a great hunting experience, it’s generally a good idea to consider that whatever you’re hunting can work for dining as well. In other words, if you’re going to kill an animal, you might as well eat it too. This prevents some animal activists from getting on your case about killing for sport as well.

Meet Locals When You’re Out and About

And when you travel to hunt, you’re bound to find all sort of interesting people to talk to as well. Though hunting itself may be a largely silent endeavor, you can always toss back a few drinks with the local hunters and pick up some color at your final destinations.

Places You Need to Visit if You Love Fishing

September 21, 2016 By Cosi Fry

The world is chock full of amazing places to visit if you love fishing. Each corner of the world holds its own odd, mysterious, large, small, poisonous, or downright ugly catches, and each pocket is waiting to be discovered. They call it fishing and not catching for a reason. It’s not always easy to get a fish on the line, in the net, or in your hand. If you’re into catching crab or other monsters of the sea, the task becomes even more toilsome as the labor and destinations get colder and more exotic.

Whether you visit to actually do some fishing, or you visit to see the landscape that is home to some of the best fishing in the world, here are places you absolutely need to visit if you’re into all things fishing:

Alaska

Alaska is a land that is magical and dangerous in its own right. First of all, it’s huge. It is the biggest state in America, but it’s often hard to believe because when you see a map of the state, it’s usually out of proportion in comparison to other states. Being that it’s so huge and so far up north, the land is pristine as it comes in the United States.

Alaska has 8 national parks, so if you love the outdoors, it’s the first place you need to go. The rivers and lakes don’t end, so you’ll never be in danger of overfishing the waters, and since the state is so big and there’s so much wilderness to go around, you’ll never have to worry about hooking your line to another fisherman’s bait.

Minnesota

Summertime is a time that is full of fishing. The weather is great, the early mornings and evenings provide the perfect weather for catching something good, and you’ve got the time to lure in something good.

However, if you limit your fishing to the summer, you’re cutting yourself short. Fish do live throughout the whole of the entire year, afterall. If you really love fishing, are committed, and want to do something different, head over to Bald Eagle Lake in Minnesota during the wintertime and do some ice fishing. You’ll freeze your tush off, but maybe you can make a little igloo while you’re at it. That’ll be a fun story to tell the grandchildren.

The Amazon

Exotic and scary, perhaps, but if you love fishing, you can’t pass up going to the amazon basin in Brazil. With surrounding jungles and rushing rivers all around you, you’re bound to catch some pretty interesting things. Though there’s a lot of fear around piranhas, you can still catch them and eat them. Imagine having one of those badboys tacked on the wall for display.

5 Reasons to Get A Kayak

April 19, 2015 By Louise

Have you always dreamed of paddling off to an island and staying overnight; far from the confines of roads and vehicle accessible areas? While this may be possible to do in a motorized boat, kayaks are far more adaptable vehicles. Many waterways do not tolerate the noise and disruption boats offer, so they are not allowed at all. Included here are a few of the major benefits offered by kayaks.

1. Access to Remote Locations

Kayaks are often allowed on lakes and waterways that do not allow motorized boats. These tend to be more remote, tranquil waterways that are untouched by humans. Many of these areas do not see much development or change because they are protected, so the views can be that much more breathtaking.

2. Ability to Navigate Shallow Water

Everyone knows to watch the water depth when you’re in a boat. You don’t want to scrape that hull open and begin taking on water. Shallow water is almost a non-issue for kayakers. You can slip along in two inches of water when you are in a hard shell. For inflatable kayaks, you may want to be more cautious due to the risk of sticks causing holes in your boat, but if the water is clear you can watch for any possible problems. [Read more…]
