Visit Greece: A Holiday Paradise

July 23, 2013 By Harpermac

If you’re looking for a great holiday getaway, consider beautiful Greece. The weather is warm and sunny all year. You’ll have access to some of the most well-known historical and cultural attractions, a multitude of outdoor activities and delicious cuisine.

The holidays are the off-season in Greece, unlike warmer European countries like Spain. Due to the beaches, summer is the most popular time tourists visit Greece. By going during the holiday off-season, you’ll beat the crowds and score cheaper lodging rates.

When deciding where to go in Greece, read about the different regions. Each is different so choose the one that appeals the most to you. Remember that if a travel book says it is popular with tourists, it’s likely to be packed, especially during peak-season.

Once you’ve selected a region, read reviews for lodging and restaurants. Once you’re in Greece, you can deviate from your plans by asking locals for recommendations. Here are some of the most loved destinations in Greece to consider fitting into your schedule.

Culture

You’re probably aware of the cultural sites in Greece such as the Parthenon and Acropolis, but also consider checking out some lesser-known sites.

Lychnostatis Open Air Museum

This museum is located near the sea. Learn about the traditional way of life in Crete through artifacts and folk art. Also part of the museum is a nature tour full of flowers and cacti. See a wine vat and olive press and sample honey and homemade wine.

National Archaeological Museum

For anyone interested in art and culture, this museum is a must-see. The museum contains artifacts from all over Greece including pottery, gold and many statues. Be sure to check the museum hours, as it sometimes closes early.

Outdoor

Whether you want to walk the beach, climb a mountain or soak in hot springs, Greece has the outdoor adventure you’re looking for.

Mt. Lycabettus (Likavitos)

Enjoy a panoramic view of Athens from this scenic mountain. You can see Acropolis and many other attractions. Take a hike to the top of the mountain or go by cable car. If you do decide to walk, know that there are many stops along the way. Once you’re at the top, take some beautiful pictures and recharge at the restaurant or café.

Lake Vouliagmeni

If it gets a little warm during your vacation, visit this lake for swimming. You can also enjoy hot springs or volcanic baths. These waters are believed to serve medicinal purposes, but even if they don’t, you’ll feel refreshed after relaxing in this natural oasis.

Food

People from all over the world brag about Mediterranean cuisine. Of course you can experience it in Greece, but don’t forget to stop at other interesting eateries.

Spyros Taverna

Visit this restaurant for classic Greek dishes from breakfast until late. Besides the delicious food, the customer service is incredible with the owners even picking up guests and returning them to their hotels. For a home-cooked meal with service to make you feel like family, look no further than Spyros.

Funky Gourmet

Visit this restaurant in Athens for an unforgettable experience. The contemporary menu features twists on American fare, such as burgers. It also serves dishes smoking from dry ice and others with foam. It is a popular restaurant, so be sure to make a reservation.

If you do decide to visit Greece, make sure you pack sunscreen as it is very expensive to purchase once you’re in the country. Take some sodium chloride nose drops with you as the weather is very dry and can cause problems. Consider holiday insurance if your current health insurance doesn’t cover you while abroad. Plan your trip in advance but leave room in your schedule for exploring. Enjoy your trip to Greece!
