Bicycle touring is one of the most leisurely ways of exploring a place.  Short trips can be done in a day while longer trips can be planned for a number of days.  It can be done on a person’s own initiative with a select group or organized by a professional holiday specialist.

It was during the 1930’s that bicycle touring started to become popular as an outdoor activity.  Touring clubs started advertising for week-long cycling trips and recommended hostels used along the way.  The growth however of organized cycling holidays was felt during the 1980s as commercial organizations began sponsoring similar events.  The sponsorship came in different ways and were provided to individuals and groups who were either in it as a personal holiday or as part of an organized charity event with a designated beneficiary.

There were some who made it a personal mission to go around the world while cycling while others combined it with travel writing.  There are different types of  bicycle touring ranging from lightweight to expedition type.  The choice would depend on what level of participation a cyclist would like to give in a cycling tour.

Cycling tours or bicycle touring is seen as a very relaxed and healthy option of seeing the world especially if there is enough time given to exploration rather than concentrating on the miles covered.  It is probably the best option to nature tripping using a mode of transportation.  Walking , of course is another healthy option for nature tripping.
