Fun and Easy Camping Recipes

June 21, 2007 By noemi

I still remember with fondness the numerous times we went camping when I was a kid. Though the memories of the activity are quite vivid, I can barely remember the last date that I went camping. Still, I believe that camping is one activity that the family will enjoy as a whole. One really enjoyable thing about camping is the food. As you are roughing it out, you don’t really have the amenities you have at home. The result? Most of the food is roasted over an open fire! I think that this was the part that I really enjoyed, especially at night. Images of a roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire never fail to evoke something heartwarming. Yet there is more to camping food that hotdogs and marshmallows. Here are some good ideas for your next camping trip.

First off, bring a lot of aluminum foil with you. You can actually do a lot of stuff with this! Try veggies for starters. I know not all kids are really into veggies but I am sure that they have at least one or two that they like. What you can do is take along some of these and then wash them thoroughly, dice them, then cover them in foil. Involve the kids in the whole process. Once completely wrapped, place the packages over the fire for around 30 minutes. You just might be surprised at how much your kids will like this dish!

How about fries? Every kid loves fries. To give your children a taste of “wild” fries, bring some good potatoes with you and cut them up. Spray the foil liberally with oil and then spray some more on the potatoes. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on top. To make things more interesting, you can use other seasonings like Old Bay. You can then wrap the whole thing up and then roast for about 45 minutes.

Happy camping and roasting!
