A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of dining at one of Asia’s most amazing restaurants, Cirocco at Bangkok‘s State Tower. Soaring 63 floors high, the restaurant gives the diner the rare privilege of savouring an impressive meal al fresco, with views of the city and beyond.
We arrived early to have pre-dinner drinks at sunset, and I won’t ever forget walking down the Cinderella-like steps from the Dome down to the bar (whose lights changed colour, a bit like a show unto itself) as I had my first glimpse of the spectacular views.
We lingered at the bar with our cocktails, watching more guests arrive, all of whom obviously felt the same way as I did as they descended down the Cinderella stairs.
We moved on to our table to be met with a delicious sounding menu with the likes of:
To start with:
Lobster bisque flamed with VSOP Cognac, laced with lobster morsels
Truffle consommé with foie gras raviolini
Sirocco garden salad with poached vegetables, mozzarella, avocado and table tomatoes
with balsamic olive oil vinaigrette
Caesar salad with romaine, anchovies, crispy soft shell crab , shaved Parmigiano
and traditional Caesar dressing
Barberie duck confit with a salad of poached figs, frisee and gorgonzola-pancetta vinaigrette
Followed by:
Pan roasted black sea bass and tiger prawn on kalamata and sun-dried tomato puree
with white shrimp and yellow tomato salsa
Grilled fillet of white snapper on herb gnocchi topped with a salad of tomato confit
served with citrus reduction
Char grilled marinated rack of lamb with a crisp rillette, curried bell pepper couscous
and olive rosemary jus
Seared veal medallion topped with ricotta spinach ravioli served with potato galette
on a Pommery mustard sauce
Cepes mushroom marinated USDA certified Prime beef sirloin with roast potatoes
and baby root vegetables
The above was just a small sampling of what we were faced with. Needless to say I opted for the seafood offerings, while my companion went for the meats. Accompanied by some exceptional wine, we savoured our delicious meal, barely leaving room for dessert which was a choice of a rather large and intimidating buffet table of sinful delights, or the ala carte, which I chose so as to avoid having to drag my stuffed-goose self away from my comfortable chair.
Just as the jazz band began playing (imagine playing to that view every night!), I polished off my excellent meal with one of the best tart tatins I have had in my life, perfect buttery crispiness filled with an exquisite almondy paste and paired with homemade vanilla ice cream.
After dinner, we ventured upstairs on one of the building’s other venues, an open air bar where we kicked our shoes off, and leant on cushions while sipping champagne. A perfect evening!
