Fiji’s Top Five Islands

September 6, 2006 By Zahir

Hollywood stars have long regarded the idyllic Fiji islands as favourite paradise. And with good reason, its far away from nosing paparazzi (well, geographically miles away from LA at least) with some fantastic resorts offering not just comfort but all-important privacy.

Here are the top five picks for a celeb-worthy holiday in Fijian paradise:

1. Yaqeta Island

Part of the volcanic chain of islands of the Yasawas, here you’ll be treated to seemingly endless stretches of white sand, glimmering blue lagoons and fantastic diving, snorkeling and fishing.

Resort: The Navatu Stars – Huts from $350

2. Denarau Island

In close proximity to the airport through a causeway, this island is a good jump-off point to explore the other islands. Beaches here aren’t famously pretty, but there is an interesting market and swami temple as well as an exciting river jet-boat trip to try out.

Resort: The Sheraton – rooms at $315, 2 bedroom villas are double the price.

3. Tokoriki Island

This northernmost volcanic island and set in a picturesque lagoon, and the ideal place for underwater activities as well as to explore the tiny nearby islands – one of which was featured in Tom Hanks’ “Castaway”.

Resort: Tokoriki Island – huts “bures” from $500

4. Turtle Island

The 500-acre island is an exclusive resort with no less than 14 lovely beaches – each one assigned to just one hut on the island.

Resort: Turtle Island – “bures” from about $2,200 per night.

5. Taveuni Island

Lush and full of rainforests, this is the 3rd largest island in Fiji. If you like to walk or hike, Taveuni is the island to visit for its glorious walks and scenic waterfalls.

Resort: Matangi– treehouses for $1,350, huts for $792
