3 Tips for Eating Healthy While Traveling

March 1, 2023 By Carmen Esate

For people who have issues with food, whether you have a problem eating enough or you find yourself frequently overeating, being on the road and traveling can really bring out the worst in you. Even if you’ve been able to create a healthy routine for yourself when at home, that’s all thrown out the window once you’re in a different environment. Luckily, there are quite a few things you can do to help keep yourself on the right track. To show you how, here are three tips for eating healthy while traveling.

Eat Before You Board The Plane

Although there are options for food to eat while you’re on the plane, it’s generally a better idea to eat before you board the plane. Amy Gorin, a contributor to Food Network, shares that when you get food at the airport rather than on the plane, you have more options to choose from that might be healthier. Additionally, at an airport restaurant or kiosk, you can often have an easier time making adjustments to your order that will turn out to be healthier for you. On the plane, you may just have to take whatever you’re given.

Find Balance When Eating Out

When you’re traveling, you’ll likely find yourself eating out a lot more than you normally would at home. And while this might be the most convenient option, it’s not going to be convenient if you pick unhealthy foods that make you feel sick or cause you to gain unwanted weight. To combat this, Francesca Street, a contributor to CNN, recommends that you find balance when eating out. For example, if you want to eat a big, hearty dinner, try to keep your other meals lighter. And if you indulge during breakfast, you may want to skip having a heavy lunch or dinner that day. At the very least, try to order an extra vegetable whenever you’re eating out to help you get the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

Pack Your Own Snacks

If you’ll frequently find yourself in transit during your travels, one of the best things you can do to stay healthy is pack your own healthy snacks. Not only may you not know when you’ll be eating again, but you also can’t ensure the quality of food you’ll have available to you when traveling. But if you prepare by having your own healthy snacks, you’ll always have something suitable on hand. Sam Smith, a contributor to Men’s Health, recommends toting around things like nuts, honey, or protein bars.

For those concerned about their ability to eat healthy food when they’re not in the convenience of their own home, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you find ways to make healthy food choices while traveling.
