Super Saver Trip Tips: Road Trip Gas Tip

November 12, 2007 By jangelo

Road trips are fun but with the soaring gas prices it definitely is more expensive than it used to be. There are plenty of little things you can do to save on gas.

  1. Take your most gas-friendly car – If you have a hybrid car then obviously it would be the perfect choice. By taking a smaller car you will have less space but unless you have a big family and won’t fit in then bring the smaller car unless it isn’t in good condition…which brings us to tip # 2.
  2. Make sure your car is in good condition – By having your engine tuned, filter,s cleaned, oil changed, and tired inflated properly you can improve your gas mileage as much as 19 percent!
  3. Pack lightly – The more stuff a car has to carry the greater it reduces efficiency. Having a fully-loaded trunk and roof rack can reduce your mileage up to 15% (due to weight and air drag). So pack wisely, leave the stuff you know you won’t need and fit everything into the trunk if possible.
  4. Buy gas wisely – The best day of the week to buy gas is Wednesday because oil prices usually go up on the weekends and then takes time to come down a couple of days. It might just be a few cents but if you are going on a long trip think of all the cents you save. Do not buy gas on exit ramps for highways because they usually have the highest prices. Fill up you tank at the station with the lowest gas price before you leave.
