4 Reasons to Choose Italy for Your Next Ski Destination

March 20, 2015 By Louise

Are you on a constant quest to find those hidden getaway destinations for more affordable, undiscovered prices? Look no more. Italy has only recently risen as a popular ski destination, and the prices have not yet caught up. Italians are widely known as being lovers of good food and wine, and the ski destinations have no shortage of friendly atmosphere and breath-taking scenery. Italy has upgraded to some of the most modern ski-lift systems in Europe with state-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming. They are also one of the last great places in the Alps with accessible heli skiing, which has been outlawed in much of Europe.

Italian Alps

The Italian Alps are a stunning, scenic beauty, incredible to behold. Home to Aosta Valley, filled with many popular ski resorts; Italy has no shortage of hidden treasures. The Aosta Valley resorts allow skiers to reach breath-taking elevation for prime skiing opportunities on modern ski-lift technology. If you are seeking glacial adventure, Italy houses the famous Matterhorn glacier as well as the Gran Paradiso. If downhill is not your preferred method, there are also many options for cross-country skiing circuits as well as ice skating rinks.

Good Food and Wine

Italians are renowned for their fantastic pallets in relation to food and wine. After a long day on the slopes, every skier is looking forward to a bottle of great wine and hot Italian cuisine. When visiting Italy, you do not resort to selections like beer or soda to accompany your dinner; not when there are so many favorable wine options. And we all know that carb loading is a must before a long day on the slopes, so be sure to enjoy pasta dishes like lasagna, chicken cacciatore, or tetrazzini.

Affordable and Family Friendly

The Aosta Valley and Courmayeur have short transfer times and flexible hotels, which makes them the ideal weekend getaway or short break destination. Resorts tend to be very friendly and accommodating to children, so making a family trip is much more conceivable. Some of these resorts even have short transfers to international airports, making it feasible to ski these slopes from out of country.

Heli Skiing

You know you have arrived as a skier when you have the opportunity to go heli skiing. This is an experience like no other and Italian slopes are primed and waiting. Skiers are offered the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views and vistas on their trip to the top before their euphoric ride down virgin powder. With the high population density of Europe, heli skiing is highly regulated and completely outlawed in France and Germany due to environmental concerns. It has become vastly limited, which makes it all the more desirable to many skiers.
