Should You Be Traveling on Christmas Day?

December 25, 2013 By Teresa Martinez

Christmas Day is a day where most people will be safe in their homes, celebrating the day with family and friends. It is quite common for people to put business or travel on hold during this day. Reality however says that sometimes, Christmas Day travel cannot be helped and sometimes, it also has its advantages.

Christmas Promos

It is no secret that airlines charge more as flight dates go nearer the holidays. However, it is a fact that the main day itself is a lean day for travel because people would want to stay put in their homes to be with family. This is the reason why many airlines have their respective promos to encourage travelers to fly on Christmas Day or New’s Year’s day for example.

Airline fares are made lower. Some freebies are provided. Others choose to go all-out with additional services to passengers. These are all in the name of convincing travelers to choose their airline at a time when so many airplane seats are vacant.

Competing for Passengers

Although not every airline will be able to launch a sensationally viral promo similar to that of WestJet which made many passengers’ Christmas wishes come true, many airline have been offering and continue to entice passengers to choose them. The bigger challenge here is actually convincing passengers to take that flight on that particular day. In order to do this, airlines have to be extraordinarily creative.

Given the fact that there are passengers that make use of Christmas day flights by their own choice, the number is not really considered commercially viable thus the intense promotion.  Some travelers will have no other choice but to take them given their personal limitations in time and commitments. It is much harder to convince passengers who have all the choices when it comes to cost and flight schedule.

Traveling on Christmas Day

Business travelers who need to close their transactions up until Christmas Eve will have no choice but to take Christmas Day flights if they want to be home for the holidays. As to the question of whether you should be traveling on Christmas Day, the answer may vary. On a personal note, I believe it would be quite alright to take that Christmas flight to go back home to our family. I have my reservations though in choosing Christmas Day to fly away from home.
